In other words, its tough enough without shooting yourself in the foot by engaging in sure-fire career shorteners. If you want to build a sustainable music career - and yes, give up the day job - avoid these five music career killers. 01Chasing the Small PictureAnn Tornkvist / Staff/Getty ImagesAlthough the music industry is the one long, extended party you might see depicted in movies, as a musician or someone working in the industry, you will have more than ample opportunity to dabble in lifes little excesses. For some people, the availability of alcohol and drugs can become all-consuming, and it may even seem like fun at first. The end game is that you become unpredictable, unreliable, unprofessional and just downright difficult to absprache with. Your band-mates may decide youre not worth risking their own reputations over, people may decide that youre not worth booking if youre going to show up late or not at all, your fans may decide that paying money to see you play an incoherent set is not worth it - and that is all before you even consider the risks to your own health and your personal relationships.Heres the fact You will absolutely always be able to find someone to tell you that your overindulgence is ok and to help you convince yourself that something about your behavior is what makes you interesting as a musician/inspires your creativity. These people are so easy to find, but make a point of surrounding yourself with people who really care about you enough to tell you the truth. 5 Changes to Make to Your Resume NOW - FlexJobs

5 Changes to Make to Your Resume NOW - FlexJobs5 Changes to Make to Your Resume NOW -30the ideal resume, youll get five different answers. But the important thing is to make your resume as close to perfect as possible. With that in mind, here are five changes to make to your resume right now to make it as effective as possible.5 Changes to Make to Your Resume NOW1) Replace long paragraphs with short bullet points. Recruiters read resumes in 15 to 30 seconds. Try reading yours in that short amount of time and see how far you get. By bulleting your job descriptions and shortening each sentence, you make it easier for recruiters to digest the maximum amount of information about you.2) departure every sentence with a verb. You want to make recruiters see you DOING the things on your resume, and in order to do that, you have to describe your ACTIONS. Start each bullet point with an action verb (present tense for present jobs, past tense for past jobs). For examplePrepare clients in selec ting appropriate insurance coverage given situational needsTroubleshoot issues with existing client policies and assist clients in all respectsMentor new agents and provide advice and guidance using strong interpersonal skills3) Make your formatting consistent. Every section title (Experience, Education, Certifications, Summary of Qualifications, etc.) should be the same font size and style. Your spacing should be the same throughout.4) Add numbers throughout. The more things you can quantify, the more detailed picture youll create for recruiters. For exampleExecuted training program for 20+ new employees and continuing education for 100 existing employeesSuccessfully obtained 15 new client companies throughout New EnglandGrew companys Facebook page from 500 fans to 6,000 in six months5) Be descriptive with companies and job titles. If you worked for a company that isnt well-known whose name doesnt convey their line of business, add that detail onto your resume. And if your job titl e is confusing or vague, add some detail to that as well. Using parentheses works for both situations. For exampleClient Service Representative (customer service)Bennett McLain LLC (computer software)For more job search tips and tricks, check out5 Uncommon, Excellent Career Tips4 Simple Reasons Youre Not Getting HiredCustomized Resumes and titelblatt Letters are Better for Your Job Search3 Common Resume Mistakes that are Easy To FixJob Seeking Tips From Top Career Advisor Cheryl PalmerReaders, which of these changes to make to your resume are you going to incorporate into your job search?

How to Choose the Best Job Offer, Part IIIHow to Choose the Best Job Offer, Part IIIHow to Choose the Best Job Offer, Part IIISo youve weighed your options and successfully secured a new job. Now lets take this process a step further and develop an exit strategy to ensure a graceful departure from your current job.Submit Your Two Weeks NoticeAfter the euphoria of moving on to a better opportunity starts to fizzle, youre left facing the dreaded resignation letter. Note Two weeks is standard protocol. Your current standing with the company, your anxiety to get out, or the start date of your new job can all affect the length of time youre willing to put in after you resign. Use your best judgment. So, depending on your reason(s) for leaving, writing this letter could be a breeze or it could feel like pulling teeth. But one thing is certain No matter how ecstatic you are to be leaving, you still have to be respectful. The contents of a good resignation letter look something like thisDateGr eetingOpening Express gratitude toward the employer for the knowledge you gained on the job.Body Discuss your intentions to resign and identify your last day on the job.Closing Address your intentions to contribute to a smooth departure for yourself and your department.SignatureTo deliver the news, tischset up a meeting with your manager. In this case, youll verbally explain that youve found a new job and will be leaving on a certain date, but bring a printed, signed copy of your letter for their records.Tie Up Loose EndsAfter giving your notice, youll want to go over the details of your final two weeks with your boss or HR. Heres what youll need to straighten outFind out how much paid time off you have left and what youre going to do with it. Some companies will pay you for the unused time while others will make you use it. If your company does the latter, apply it to your last two weeks and enjoy the time off before you start your new job.Discuss with a Human Resources or Finance Department representative what happens with your 401(k) account and what you would need to do to close it and move the funds elsewhere. Most importantly, write a list of projects youve been working on. This list will come in handy during your final weeks to make sure you finish any outstanding tasks and give your boss a heads up on what youll be leaving behind. If theyre replacing you with someone who requires training, discuss how it will be conducted and what projects might have to be moved to the backburner to fit the training into your schedule. What to Do if Your Boss Freaks OutI addressed this issue in another post, When Bosses Make Hotheaded Decisions. This is simply one of those situations in which moody bosses tend to freak out and tell you to leave immediately instead of putting in your last two weeks. If you think your boss will calm down after the initial blow, give him/her some space and try to address the issue at a later time (or the next day). You can try to salvage the professional relationship or take the hasty reaction as your cue to take an extended vacation.Your last two weeks might feel like the longest of your life thats usually what happens when you have something so exciting to look forward to. Just make sure to add your soon-to-be ex-colleagues to your network list in the process. You never know when theyll come in handyWhat experiences have you had in leaving a job? Graduate School may not be the Best Course to Get a Job

Graduate School may not be the Best Course to Get a Job Although the economy is slowly recovering, more than 7.5 percent of Americans are still out of work according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. For young adults aged 20-24 (in other words, recent college graduates) the statistics are even grimmer with 13.5 percent unemployment. During an economic downturn, the un- and underemployed often return to the safety of academia to weather the storm, but is going back to school really a good idea? All in Favor, Say AyeAn advanced degree may serve as a gatekeeper, of sorts, to entering or advancing within the career path of your choosing. Even if you have years of experience in your field, prospective employers may be sticklers about that piece of paper. If you find yourself being turned down for jobs because of your lack of credentials, then a diploma may be exactly what you need. You might just lea rn something, too.Another good reason to return to school is if youre thinking about radically switching gears. If youre considering a drastic career change, make sure to look for a program that offers internships, hands-on training, or shadowing. While its important to learn the theory behind the practice of your new career, its equally important to get on-the-job experience and network with your future colleagues. Be wary of zugreifbar programs that promise flexibility and convenience at the cost of credibility where you went to school is often as important as what you studied. All Opposed, Say NeighIf youre thinking about going back to school merely as a stopgap, you may regret it later. If you study for the sake of staving off unemployment for a year or two, youll find yourself no better off after you graduate. And, on average, youll be $30,000 deeper in debt. In addition, becoming a full-time student may cause you to lose your unemployment benefits, so make sure you know the rul es before registering for classes.Pursuing a more generic course of studybusiness or English, for exampleis less beneficial than targeting a specific, high-growth field. Graduate school should be a means to a specific end, not merely a continuation of your undergraduate studies. That said, there are many alternatives to taking on a full-time degree program. If you need a particular certification to move ahead in your career, either study for the exam on your own or sign up for a low-cost training program. You can also find mentoring and networking opportunities through professional organizations and civic groups, both online and locally. Colleges and tech schools usually offer continuing education programs that will allow you to learn new skills and sample new professions without investing too much time and money.Recently, more and more universities have begun to offer massive open online courses, or MOOCs. These distance-education opportunities are free, although some may require y ou to purchase textbooks, and usually last four- to six-weeks. You can sign up to study anything from ancient history to computer programming. While most offer no college credit, theyre a great way to expand your horizons and keep your skills up to date while you search for a job. Best of all, theyre presented by some of the top academic institutions in the world. Harvard, Yale, MIT, and Berkeley all offer free online courses. For even more choices, check out Coursera and Udacity.Whether youre crafting a cover letter to land the perfect job or writing an essay to get into the school of your dreams, grammar counts.

How to Successfully Navigate Job Search Ageism

How to Successfully Navigate Job Search AgeismHow to Successfully Navigate Job Search Ageism14Ageism is a fact of life. According to Dictionary.com, the definition of ageism is a tendency to regard older persons as debilitated, unworthy of attention, or unsuitable for employment. Job search ageism can be a difficult issue to tackle.Unfortunately, employment ageism exists. I define job search ageism as being perceived as unable to do a job due to health, appearance, or skills. Notice that I said perceived. Often, our perceptions become our realities.Automobile AgeismI just traded in my 2003 Honda Element DX, which Id owned for 13 years, and it had 130,000 miles on it. In this example, my Honda experienced discrimination because of its age. The dealer looked at three things to determine the cars valueMechanics (or health)AppearanceFeatures (or skills)The vehicles mechanics were in pretty good shape. I maintained it well, butit did have the original clutch and brakes. Im easy on a carTh e appearance welches okay with a few exceptions. It had no dents or dings, but the front seat was worn and the windshield was cracked. A rock chipped the windshield, and I didnt repair it quickly enough. Because of this, a crack formed quickly and went across the entire window. The crack didnt affect my vision, so I left it. It was like that for years. The car wasnt feature-rich. It was a base model with a five-speed manual transmission. Id done nothing to upgrade the vehicle, like adding a stereo, seat covers, a steering wheel cover, or anything else. The vehicle showed its age and experienced ageism, because I was offered less on the trade-in as it was perceived as being old.landsee where am I going with this?Ageism in the Second Half of LifeWhen we reach the second half of life, we may experience age discrimination or ageism. Ageism is the perception that were old and not capable of doing the job. In some cases, the perception is that we may be too expensive.HealthJust like my Hond a, were judged based on our health. This is how we walk, our weight, hair color (or lack of hair), or our general physical demeanor. If we look old, many will judge us and wonder whether we can keep up.My boss at my brde corporate gig told me that the trainer I was trying to hire didnt have the energy he wanted. This was code for too old. The person I was trying to hire was approximately the same age as me. He was a bit overweight and had a bit of gray hair, but nothing extreme. This was a classic case of ageism that was based on my bosss perception of the individual.I resigned several months later.AppearanceHow you dress and carry yourself is important. I have an image consultant who picks out all of my new clothes, because I lack good taste in clothes. When I hired her to evaluate colors for me, she eliminated more than half of my clothes during the wardrobe evaluation. By the way, this made my wife very happy. When I worked at my first tech startup in 2000, I was one in a group of four people out of 100 employees who was more than 40 years old. I depended on the young engineers who worked directly with the customers to feed information to me for my training program. Therefore, I came to work in T-shirts and jeans and because of this I was treated like a peer and not like a manager. In this instance, I managed their perceptions by how I dressed.Youll be perceived by how you dress. I have a client in her late 50s, who interviewed for a position with a hedge kenntniserlangung manager. She didnt ask about the dress code before the interview, so she showed up dressed in a conservative business suit. The hedge fund manager, who was in her early 30s, wore torn blue jeans. To say the least, she didnt get the job.SkillsWere hired for our skills. Just like my Honda in which I didnt invest any upgrades, if you dont invest in learning new skills, youll likely face discrimination. Most of the time, youll not be considered for a position without these skills, even though you could easily learn them on the job.Companies no longer wish to train their employees. Its the employees responsibility to maintain their skills. This has been a major shift in the last 10 to 20 years.Navigating Job Search AgeismThe easiest way to combat ageism is to focus on your health, appearance, and skills before you ever experience ageism. Follow these tips to combat ageismLead a healthy lifestyle. Yeahwe all know we should do this.Dress appropriately. If you need help like I do, then get help.Maintain your skills. Make sure you know your industry trends. Make sure that your skills are up to date and that, if theres a shift coming, you anticipate it. Sometimes, this is easier said than done, but if you want to stay employed, you need to keep abreast of changes. If youre experiencing job search ageism, youre perceived to be old and unable to do the job. You should focus on your health, appearance, and skills- but not necessarily in that order.Identify which area you should fi rst focus on by asking your peers. You need to get honest feedback on where to begin. Its not about what you think, but what they thinkMy last tech startup left me worn out, and I looked old when I resigned Ive since been focusing on my health by eating right, getting exercise, seeing my chiropractor regularly, and monitoring my health. For me, my health was my biggest issue, and I have been focusing on that.Readers, whats the biggest issue thats causing you job search ageism? The reason why you should risk your significance

The reason why you should risk your significanceThe reason why you should risk your significanceYoure leaving academia. I cant believe it exclaimed a good friend and fellow law professor. No, I corrected him. Im not leaving academia. Im startinga blogand writing books for the general public. Thats all.But youre ruining your scholarly significance, he asserted. Youre going to become a laughing stock. This conversation happened two years ago. I was reminded of it recently when I interviewed the yoga teacherChelsey Koruson my podcast. During the interview, she shared this excerpt from one of her favorite poemsI choose to risk my significanceto live so that which came to me as seedgoes to the next as blossom.// Dawna MarkovaWhen we look in the mirror, we tell ourselves a story. Its a story about who we are and who we arent and what we should and shouldnt do.We tell ourselves that were a serious professor, and serious professors dont blog or podcast for the general public. We tell ourselves that were a serious 60-year-old, and serious 60-year-olds dont start a second career. We tell ourselves that were a serious lawyer, and serious lawyers dont quit their careers to teach yoga.Theres a certainty to the story. The story makes us feel significant and secure. The story makes us feel welcome. The story connects us to those serious professors, lawyers, and 60-year-olds who came before us. It makes us feel safe. But instead of us shaping the story, the story shapes us. Over time, the story becomes our identity. We dont change the story because changing it would mean changing who we are. We fear losing everything we worked so hard to build, we fear that others might laugh, and we fear making a fool out of ourselves.Like all others, the story of your significance is just that A story. A narrative. A tale. If you dont like the story, you can change it. Even better, you can drop it altogether and write a new one.Writing a new story doesnt risk your significance. Lets stop fooling ourselves about that. Were in this life for a momentary blip. Were making the briefest of stands on the pale blue dot called Earth, a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam, in Carl Sagans memorable words. But when we dont act- when we stick to the illusion of our significance- the risks are far greater. We risk leaving a story untold, a canvas unpainted, a business unlaunched, a popsong unsung. It was agonizing for me to dismiss the advice of my friend- who I know had the best of intentions. There were moments of tremendous doubt along the way where I thought I made the wrong call, that perhaps I should have stuck with exclusively writing serious academic papers. But you wouldnt be reading this article if I hadnt risked my own significance. Its only when you risk your significance that what came to you as seed will go to the next as blossom. The powerful play of life goes on, as John Keating fromDead Poets Societyreminds us, and you may contribute a verse.A new verse.Even a whole new sto ry.Your story. What will it say?Ozan Varol is a rocket scientist turned law professor and bestselling author.Click hereto download a free copy of his e-book, The Contrarian Handbook 8 Principles for Innovating Your Thinking. Ignore This Resume of Greta Thunberg but Dont Ignore Climate Change

Ignore This Resume of Greta Thunberg but Dont Ignore Climate ChangeIgnore This Resume of Greta Thunberg but Dont Ignore Climate ChangeInfographic Resume of Greta Thunberg Greta Thunberg was 15 when she began protesting about climate change. Not quite a child, not yet an adult, she saw that adults were teaching her things they themselves did not follow. And she decided to make them walk their talk.Because you can never hear a child say Thats just the way of things. Its something you can only hear from adults. Its a sentence that reveals the kind of resignation that only comes with experience. But we want our children to be better than their parents. Because of that, we teach them how the world ought to be, rather than what it is.Be kind to others. Do your homework. Dont litter. Protect the planet. And they take it all very seriously because, due to their lack of experience, its all they know.I am doing this because you adults are shitting on my future. All right, all right, maybe I shou ld stop now. Im beginning to sound overly sentimental. But still, like many others, I find Gretas story inspiring. Somehow, she succeeded where everybody else failed. She made millions of people really concerned about climate change. And, in turn, these millions already made politicians do at least something. But at this point you must be wondering What does it all have to do with resumes? After all, this website is about resumes, right?Well, weve created a resume of Greta Thunberg. Whats more, we were careful not to make it entirely about Greta Thunberg because, in the end, its not about her. Its about all of us standing up for our planet.Infographic Resume of Greta ThunbergShare Your Feedback or Ideas in the Comments

Learn What a Whale Is in Sales

Learn What a Whale Is in Sales Learn What a Whale Is in Sales In sales terminology, a whale is pretty much just what it sounds like â€" its a prospect thats at least 10 times larger than your average sale. With B2B sales  Ã¢€" business to business â€" a whale prospect is often a company thats far larger than your own. In B2C or business to consumer sales, it might be a prospect who buys your priciest product option and does so regularly.   Finding and Hunting Whales   The whales are out there, but youll probably have to cross a lot of open water to get to the pod. Meanwhile, youll be sailing right above a lot of viable customers and clients along the way. Dont ignore them in favor of the big fish, particularly when youre just starting out in sales. Those small fish are your initial bread and butter, so drop your line and reel them in. Its OK to keep your eye on the pod on the horizon, but take advantage of the easy pickings along the way. Now you have to get the attention of one of those whales in the pod, and how you do this depends to some extent on the nature of your business. If youre selling luxury cars, head out to places that luxury car owners are likely to frequent, like the finest restaurants in your area. Sticking your business card under the wipers of that Mercedes-Maybach S650 Cabriolet in valet parking is a little pedestrian, but head inside and take a seat at the bar. Invest an hour. Talk up prospects. After youve guided the conversation to automobiles,  then  you can hand over your card  Ã¢€" and youve hopefully made a great impression in the meantime.   Of course, the approach can be much different in B2B transactions, but the concept remains: Dont rush in blind. Preparation is key. Identify your whale and approach with finesse. And remember, your prospect is probably being courted by a dozen of your competitors. Youll have to be extremely impressive to outdo everyone else and bring the whale in as a customer. Closing the Deal   Closing deals with whales often takes far more time and effort than a typical sale, but these deals are so much larger â€" a single whale can be the equivalent of a dozen others. This makes them very worthwhile to pursue despite the extra trouble while youre still trolling for other, smaller fish. You might even turn the whale into a repeat customer so hes even more valuable. Follow the same sales process that you use for standard prospects, but bring it up a notch. If you usually research a prospect well enough to ask three customized questions during the presentation, youll want to come up with 10 customized questions for your whale. Anticipate that he will be a harder sell. Dont skimp on personal touches like thank you notes or even small gifts that reflect the prospects interests. After the Sale   If you do succeed, pay extra attention to your new large-size customer. Touch base frequently to be sure that hes satisfied and hopefully will continue to buy from you.

How to Change Accounting Methods Using IRS Form 3115

How to Change Accounting Methods Using IRS Form 3115 How to Change Accounting Methods Using IRS Form 3115 The Internal Revenue Service allows businesses to use either the accrual accounting method or the cash accounting method  to track and report financial data. Business owners also have the option of using a combination of both accounting systems. Theres a lot of flexibility here, but theres one catch- you must continue to use whatever method you choose when you first inform the IRS that youve elected to track and report that way during the first year of your business operation. It isnt quite as carved-in-granite as it sounds, however. You can reach out to the IRS in advance and request permission to change accounting methods. As long as you do so, you should be fine, but failure to make the request can result in penalties imposed by the IRS. Getting IRS Approval If you elect to change things up at any time after youve set up your accounting method and filed your first business income tax return, you must file a current Form 3115 to request the change. It is the case whether you want to change your overall accounting method or just the accounting treatment of any particular item. Changes in accounting methods that require approval from the IRS include switching from a cash basis method to an accrual basis method or vice versa- switching from an accrual basis method to a cash basis method. You must also request an official OK from the IRS to make a change in the method or basis used to value your inventory. Changes in your depreciation or amortization methods generally require approval, but some changes in the straight-line method are permitted without special permission from the IRS. If youre unsure if your situation qualifies for this special dispensation, consult with a business tax professional to make sure because the rules are complex. When and Where to File Form 3115 You can request approval for a change in accounting methods in one of two ways.   File Form 3115 in duplicate for an automatic change request. Attach the original Form 3115 to your federal income tax return for the year of the change, including extensions. A copy of Form 3115 must also be filed with the IRS National Office no earlier than the first day of the year of the change and no later than when the original is filed with the federal income tax return for the year of change. The process is similar for an advance consent request.  Form 3115 must be filed during the tax year for which the change is requested. According to the IRS, If the tax year is a short period, file Form 3115 by the last day of the short tax year. File the Form 3115 with the IRS National Office.  Form 3115 should be filed as early as possible during the year of change to provide adequate time for the IRS to respond prior to the due date of the filers return for the year of change.

Here is a very simple method for you to achieve success

Here is a very simple method for you to achieve success Here is a very simple method for you to achieve success As I’m writing these words, I’m at the home of one of my mentors, Dan Sullivan, who is the founder of Strategic Coach. The only reason I tell you I’m here is that, for years, I would have been blown away simply to meet this man. Now, we not only have a close friendship but we also work together on big projects.I tell you this simple story for a few quick reasons: No matter how big your dreams are, they aren’t big enough You need to learn how to create EXPERIENCES that shift and upgrade your psychology You need to learn to meet the people you aspire to be like Both your mindset and goals are limited right now Whatever it is that you want right now, you can have it - but then, you need to continue stretching your mindset and experiences The truth about goalsMost people do not know how to set or achieve goals. Most people don’t CLEARLY know what they want. And they believe they must be clear BEFORE setting goals. The process of writing your goals down on paper, every single day, is actually HOW you clarify your goals. You’re not supposed to have the whole future figured out, right now.You figure it out, more fully, one day at a time. The purpose of goals is to guide and clarify your thinking. You get to decide what clarity means to you - and you get to decide what your future looks like. You do this by intentionally writing down what you would like to see happen. It’s really that simple. However, the only truly USEFUL form of goals is in the form of numbers or events. A brain works really well when it is trying to create a specific event or a specific number. So, when you’re looking at your goals, you want to be sure that they are either numeric or actual events in the real world.Your brain needs to quantify, in the actual world, what it is you’re trying to do.Simply “Having a better life,” or “Being financially successful,” or “Being a professional author,” are all HORRIBLE goals. You will never get the clarity you need to be truly motivated by this kind of goal setting. You need SPECIFIC NUMBERS and SPECIFIC EVENTS.Both of these are very important. For example, If you want to improve your relationship with your spouse, you need to write down in your journal the exact number of dates you plan to take your lover on in the next 30 days. You also need to write down SPECIFIC EVENTS that you want to create in that relationship - in the 3-D world, not just in your head. If you want to improve your income, then you need to write down specific amounts of money you will make in the next 30, 60, and 90 days - and even in the next 1, 3, and 5 years. You also need to write down SPECIFIC EVENTS that you will create with your money, such as donating $1 million dollars to your church or buying the house of your dreams, etc. Numbers are powerful because they are measurable. If your goals are not measurable, then they aren’t actually goals. If you don’t also have SPECIFIC EVENTS you want to create, then you don’t have the creative clarity to produce something significant in the real world.Me, sitting here at Dan Sullivan’s house, is an event in real time that shows me that I’m actually moving my life in a consciously-designed direction.Events are happening in the real world that I was only writing about in my journal 1â€"3 years ago.The better you get at this process, the faster you’ll achieve your goals. One other tidbit. When you put yourself into powerful experiences, you want to allow those experiences to truly reshape your psychology. While in powerful environments, you want to really stretch your imagination and future.Don’t play small. As Napoleon Hill stated, “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, the mind can achieve.”In certain situations, you are more receptive to change. Yo ur subconscious is more fluid and flexible and within your reach. So you might as well grab it and shake it a little bit.For example, while at a recent event where I was learning to grow my business, I was feeling really inspired and in what I would call a “peak state.”I decided to pull out my journal and begin writing goals down that were far bigger than anything I’ve truly imagined.According to neuroscience - in order for visualization to work, you not only need to be intellectually stimulated but also emotionally committed.True imagination is both cognitive and affective - mental and emotional. When you become emotionally committed to your visualization and goal setting, you begin to reshape your personality. Because your personality is based on emotions and memories, not intellect, you’ll be able to truly visualize your goals. While writing your goals down in a far more imaginative state of mind, you’ll begin to get INSIGHTS. Those insights are the gold you’re lookin g for. Those insights are ideas about both the WHAT and the HOW.You’ll begin thinking about creative solutions to your problems. You can’t actually get creative solutions if you aren’t actively seeking something bigger and better in your life. But while you truly entertain an idea, goal, or future event you intend to experience, you give your brain something tangible to begin playing with and solving. This is a good use of the brain, and very few people have designed systems for getting their brain activated at peak levels. What you measure matters, so measure what mattersWhat you focus on expands. The things you choose to measure influence and determine your mindset and mental focus. For a long time, my core metric of measurement was the number of email subscribers I added to my blog. This is a picture of my current email subscriber base - those who subscribe to my weekly newsletter. In the past 30 days, I’ve gotten around 19,000 new people. The thing is, I don’t really care abou t this number anymore. I care about something much more important. While my focus was on email subscribers, I wasn’t actually making any money. When you set a goal for a specific metric, you then put your brain on track for developing the skills to attain that metric.Because my focus was on getting email subscribers, I allowed my brain to learn how to get new email subscribers. I learned how to develop the skills and abilities that would lead to that particular outcome. However, in moving forward and evolving in my life, I realize that that particular method, although useful, is not the best metric I should be monitoring. There are better metrics. There are metrics more powerful and useful. What you measure determines the goals you set. The goals you set determine the future development of your brain and personality.Instead of measuring the number of emails I get, I’m now measuring the number of clients I’m getting. I’m also measuring SPECIFIC EVENTS around my work, personal life, and family. The key events I’m seeking in my work relate to powerful experiences for my clients, as well as key transformational experiences I have in my own life - such as the one I’ve been having this week with Dan Sullivan. In other words, my focus has shifted to tangible experiences for myself and my clients. This focus has led to far greater inspiration and insights in my morning journaling than simply focusing on the number of email subscribers I get.Your brain develops as you focus on attaining specific numbers and creating SPECIFIC events!Ready to upgrade?I’ve created a cheat sheet for putting yourself into a PEAK-STATE, immediately. What Happens If Employer Cant Contact Your References After an Interview

What Happens If Employer Cant Contact Your References After an Interview What Happens If Employer Cant Contact Your References After an Interview Some time after your job interview and before any offer can be made, most employers will try to get in touch with your references. But what if they cant contact them? Will that keep you from getting a job offer? Is there anything you need to do beforehand to make sure this doesnt happen? Some reasons an employer cant reach your referencesAs someone who has done reference checking, this can be a real make or break moment for a potential hire. Even candidates we love still have to get past the reference-checking part of the hiring process. So what kinds of things can get in the way of a successful contact? The references phone number is wrongTheir alternate contact information (such as email) is wrongThe person doesnt work there any more and no one knows how to contact themThe employer reaches them but they dont remember youNo one returns the voice mail messageWhat you need to do to prevent this from happeningEven if youve done all you can to make sure that you are giving a potential empl oyer a list of current and valid references, things can happen. But there are some things you can do to increase the chances of the employer actually reaching your references and of getting a solid reference that will help!Make sure you have at least 3 people you worked for who can speak to your qualifications. (A co-worker can sometimes be a good alternative, but do your best to list mostly former or current bosses.)Pick people whom you know for sure will speak well of you, if at all possible.Contact each one before listing them, and make sure they are willing to be a reference for you.If theyve changed jobs, they can still be a reference; just make a note of that on your reference sheet.Check carefully to make sure you have the right phone number(s)/email address for each one.Let them know which specific job(s) youre interviewing for and/or the general job category so they wont be surprised.Ask if theres any interview advice theyd like to give you.Thank them for being a reference . (And make sure to let them know and thank them again if you get the job.)A few more thoughtsAlthough some people look at a reference sheet as just something to throw together, a reference list needs time and attention. How you prepare your list (even the look of it), how accurate the information is, and how reachable the references are all reflect directly on you and the type of effort you might put into your work if hired. Is it a legal requirement to give a reference? No. Your past employers are not legally required to give a reference, let alone a good reference. Remember to speak with each reference before you share their contact information â€" you don’t want to catch anyone off-guard and cost yourself a great employment opportunity. Can you get a bad reference from an employer? Getting a bad reference from an employer is rare, but it’s not illegal to give a poor review. Most employers and colleagues are unlikely to give a poor reference. However, you can increase the l ikeliness of a glowing review by asking your former supervisors and coworkers if they’ll be your references. Letting your colleagues know ahead of a recruiter’s call give them time to focus on your past successes. What can an employer say about former employees? An employer should, at the minimum, confirm your dates of employment. However, a reference can legally share as much information as they choose about you and your tie with their company. Therefore, it’s important that you maintain a strong work ethic and positive reputation in order to ensure a strong reference. So do your best to find good references who can be contacted. Double check the contact info. And prepare each one for the calls so they will be more likely to take the time to get back to the employer and give you a reference you can be proud of.Good luck!= SAMPLE REFERENCES page [plus answers to reference questions] More articles you might enjoy:?     Why Credit History Really Matters When You Apply for a Job ?     Job Interviews: How to Make a Job Interview Go Really Well!?     Waiting Game: How to Deal with the Silence After a Job Interview ?     When Will I Finally Hear Back From a Job Interview??     MORE on What Really Goes On Behind the Scenes

My Biggest Career Regret I Wish I Could Go Back and Change

My Biggest Career Regret I Wish I Could Go Back and Change My Biggest Career Regret I Wish I Could Go Back and Change We all make bad career choices at one time or another. However, some choices are more serious than others and can have a far-reaching impact. If you have some career regrets, you’re not alone. Roughly 41% of employees who didn’t combine their personal passions with their work regretted their career paths, according to a survey conducted by Philips North America. On the other hand, just 23% of workers who were able to do so regretted their paths. Another study from Officebroker.com found a whopping 77% of workers have made career choices they regret. The Cheat Sheet asked a few professionals to tell us about the biggest regrets they’ve had. Here are some career regrets folks wished they could go back and change. Do you have any of the same regrets? When I was a teacher, my boss was a micromanager who hated independent thought and tried to push me out of a job. After five years, she succeeded. My biggest regret is I put up with her bullying for five years. No one should have to spend eight hours a day in a toxic, miserable environment . I would advise all employees to keep their dignity and stand up to bullying bosses . At the very least, look for another job. Life is too short to spend eight or more hours a day stressed and miserable. If more people refused to put up with workplace bullying, it would stop. Jonathan Bennett, founder, The Popular Man My biggest regret is moving from a human resources management position to a regional human resources manager role from one company to another on a lateral salary move. Breaking down the salary from the human resources manager job plus bonus and the flat salary of the regional position, it was a no-gain in incentive, with additional work and travel. At that time in my career, I wanted a new job so badly that I accepted the first offer they made without negotiating anything . Looking back, I would have considered all options prior to accepting the position and had a solid understanding about the requirements . I would have spent more time preparing for salary negotiations and walking away from the role if I did not feel comfortable. Always have a plan B, and walk away if you feel uncomfortable with the situation. Do not get desperate and accept the first offer. Matthew Burr, human resources consultant, Burr Consulting, LLC I took a job as a district supervisor in a nationwide retail organization .   At first, I worked crazy-long hours, spending my days in the field and doing paperwork in the evening at our regional office. Most evenings, a fellow female supervisor and I were the only ones in the office, and we often stopped at a nearby fast-food place for something to eat before heading to our homes. One such night we were talking about movies, and she mentioned a new movie she wanted to see, but none of her friends would go with her. I volunteered to go with her. That movie led to multiple dates and a budding romantic relationship. We didn’t know what our boss would think, so we kept things very quiet. At some point, her old long-time boyfriend got back into the picture, and our relationship eventually ended . After our breakup , working around the office became difficult for both of us. I was quite happy when I received a promotion that moved me to another city 130 miles away. Although the episode involved some pain, I learned an important lesson: Dating co-workers is almost always a bad idea. I never did it again. Timothy Wiedman, associate professor of management and human resources (retired), Doane University My biggest regret was getting my master’s degree in finance. I took it only because of a large scholarship and it being a nine-month commitment. Our startup was taking off, but I still decided to pursue the degree even though I wasn’t interested in the field. Don’t let schooling interfere with your education. I should have dropped out of the program one month in. Our company was growing very rapidly in terms of employees and revenue, and I wished I had more time per week to dedicate toward it. Drop out of school if it makes sense. The work I was doing outside of class was my dream job. I couldn’t wait to get out of class and bike over to the office. I was learning so much on a day-to-day basis at work that it rendered my classroom experience completely useless. Ettore Fantin-Yusta, director of marketing at Securable.io My biggest career regret was not taking a job opportunity because my current employer created a role for me (only after I told them I was leaving). I thought after being at the company for years that I was truly “valued.” [I later found out] they only needed me for a limited period of time and then that job ended. I should have followed my gut instinct that had led me to go after another job offer . Too often, as employees you forget when it comes down to it, sometimes you’re just a title and salary number on a ledger. Getting an opportunity and then staying where it’s comfortable typically doesn’t work out. Your employer will know you aren’t happy, and in the end, the relationship changes. Don’t look for a job hoping your current employer will “wake up” and see how awesome you are.   Once you have made the decision, stick with it. If all of a sudden a raise and title change are available, you should be concerned. What was keeping them from doing something sooner? Did they just figure you would stay indefinitely and took your contributions and value for granted? Or, my personal favorite, now that they know you were looking and you took the “new” offer, they’ll seek to replace you quietly behind the scenes anyway. I spent so much time working toward my MBA in finance and pursuing a career in finance that I put off doing what I really loved, which was helping people. I have been an EMT for years and always loved that, but didn’t see it as a full-time job until an opportunity presented itself, which led to me start my own company, ParaDocs Worldwide . I won’t call it a regret, though, because the things I learned while studying finance and during my short-lived career I use today when running my business. I just wish I had been bold enough to pursue my passion sooner. If you have a passion for something, pursue it. Your passion and your full-time position don’t have to be mutually exclusive. It’s possible to combine the two, as is evidenced by the company I started. Forge your own path. Don’t follow the one carved out for you. Alex Pollak, CEO and founder of ParaDocs Worldwide My biggest regret was waiting until I was 57 to quit the corporate world and start my own business . I worked for a Fortune 200 company. I was compensated very well and challenged daily, but I desired freedom and control over my life. If I could do things differently, I would have developed a mentoring relationship with other entrepreneurs and listened to their advice. I would have combined my knowledge and entrepreneurial dreams and created a detailed strategic business plan. I would have started the journey. My advice to someone in a similar situation would be don’t wait to change careers . Ten years later my life has never been better. Bob Shirilla, founder of Simply Bags I regret I wasn’t more aggressive in building out my career on TV. I had the window just before and after my book was published, The Wall Street Professional’s Survival Guide , but I was not systematic in establishing traction. Quite frankly, I didn’t know enough to know that a book doesn’t sell itself. I was naive in assuming that growth would happen organically and by word of mouth. Following the publication of my book, I was unprepared to utilize a multi-platform strategy for promotion. Although the book became a best-seller, I didn’t understand enough at the time to tap social media and the right traditional PR machine to do the heavy lifting. My advice others in a similar situation is to be bold, proactive, and willing to make an investment. Roy Cohen , career coach and author All the signs were there when I was younger for me to become a writer. However, I didn’t seriously consider this field as a possible career path until much later in my life. I finally stumbled upon a writing program offered by a local university, registered for classes, and completed my studies. Returning to school to pursue writing has proven to be one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. Following my graduation, I have explored freelance writing (and been published in numerous newspapers, magazines, and online markets), been twice chosen as a story contributor for Chicken Soup for the Soul , and written two published books of my own. My advice to others at any stage of their careers? Don’t toil away at a career you dislike or don’t find rewarding. Instead, work at something you love.

How to know when holiday drinking is hurting your brain

How to know when holiday drinking is hurting your brain How to know when holiday drinking is hurting your brain For many, the holidays are indeed the most wonderful time of the year. Families and friends come together and enjoy food, good cheer â€" and, often, alcohol.Commercially speaking, alcohol and the holidays seem to be made for each other. Alcohol can be a quick and easy way to get into the spirit of celebration. And, it feels good. After two glasses of wine, the brain is activated through complex neurobiochemical processes that naturally release dopamine, a neurotransmitter of great importance. When the dopamine molecule locks on to its receptor located on the surface of a neuron, or basic brain cell, a “buzz” occurs. It is often desirably anticipated before the second glass is empty. There are those, however, who drink right past the buzz into intoxication and, often, into trouble. For them, the brain starts releasing the same enjoyable dopamine, no different than what happens in the casual drinker’s, but it doesn’t stop there. A compulsion to binge drink can result. As someone wh o has studied alcohol use disorder for over 15 years and who has treated thousands of patients who have it, I think it’s a major, yet often poorly understood, public health problem. Our culture seems to be moving beyond the point of labeling those with opioid addictions as “weak,” and I hope we can do the same for those with alcohol use disorder, too, which is more widespread than people may appreciate. Excessive drinking accounted for one in 10 deaths among working-age adults in the United States.Moving beyond judgmentAlthough alcohol can feel as though it is relieving stress, it contributes to 88,000 deaths in the United States each year. That is more than double the number of people killed by heroin and opioid prescription drug overdose, another major public health crisis, in 2014.In addition, more than 66.7 million Americans reported binge drinking in the past month in 2015, according to the recent report on addiction by the surgeon general. The consequences to the individu al and the family are staggering, affecting physical and mental health, an increased spread of infectious disease, reduced quality of life, increased motor vehicle crashes and abuse and neglect of children, to mention a few.Scientific study of the brain has helped explain binge drinking even if it may be hard for family and friends to understand. It’s defined as drinking five or more drinks for men and four for women on the same occasion on at least one day in the past 30 days.Binge drinking is a medical condition. It happens through no fault of the individual, who is victimized by the comparative malfunction of the pleasure circuits in the brain. This causes the drinker to want more and more alcohol. Brains of binge drinkers have a disease, acknowledged by the American Medical Association since the 1950s, yet binge drinkers are often vilified.Americans typically want to know and are willing to make some lifestyle changes out of fear and common sense when it comes to diseases such as heart disease, obesity and cancer. We as a society are not quite at the same point with substance abuse disorders, but researchers are desperately trying to bring that same willingness for prevention and treatment to substance use disorders.Science understands the cause well enough to explain it and treat it so that lives can be saved and spared the devastating consequences for the millions who suffer with these conditions, their families and communities. This has become an urgent matter of national importance for scientists and medical practitioners. The three stages of addictionThe alcohol addiction process involves a three-stage cycle: Binge-Intoxication, Withdrawal-Negative Affect, and Preoccupation-Anticipation.It begins in the neurons, the basic type of brain cell. The brain has an estimated 86 billion of these cells, which communicate through chemical messengers called neurotransmitters.Neurons can organize in clusters and form networks or circuits in order to perform spec ific functions such as thinking, learning, emotions and memory. The addiction cycle disrupts the normal function of some of these networks in three areas of the brain â€" the basal ganglia, the extended amygdala and the prefrontal cortex. The disruptions do several things that contribute to continued drinking. They enable alcohol or drinking-associated triggers (cues) which lead to seeking alcohol. They also reduce the sensitivity of the brain systems, causing a diminished experience of pleasure or reward, and heighten activation of brain stress systems. Last, they reduce function of brain executive control systems, the part of the brain that typically helps make decisions and regulate one’s actions, emotions and impulses. These networks are critical for human survival. Unfortunately for the binge drinker, they become “hijacked,” and the bingeing continues even after the harmful effects have begun.Because binge drinkers’ brains feel intense pleasure from alcohol, there is a po werful motivation to binge drink again and again. What may begin as social binge drinking at parties for recreation can cause progressive neuro-adaptive changes in brain structure and function. The brain is no longer well enough to function normally. It’s getting sick. Continued partying can transition into a chronic and uncontrollable daily pattern of alcohol use. These maladaptive neurological changes can persist long after the alcohol use stops.Your brain on alcoholDuring the Binge-Intoxication Stage, a part of the brain called the basal ganglia rewards the drinker with pleasurable effects, releasing dopamine, the neurotransmitter responsible for the rewarding effects of alcohol and creating the desire for more. With continued bingeing, the “habit circuity” is repeatedly activated in another part of the basal ganglia called the dorsal striatum. It contributes to the compulsive seeking of more alcohol. This explains the intense desire (craving) which is triggered while a bing e drinker is driving by a favorite bar and can’t resist pulling in, even after a promise to go directly home after work.During the Withdrawal-Negative Affect Stage, there is a break from drinking. Because the reward circuit has a diminished ability to deliver a dopamine reward, there is far less pleasure with natural (safe) experiences â€" such as food and sex â€" compared to alcohol.During abstinence from alcohol, stress neurotransmitters such as corticotropin-releasing factor (FRC) and dynorphin are released. These powerful neurochemicals cause negative emotional states associated with alcohol withdrawal. This drives the drinker back to alcohol in order to gain relief and attempt to reestablish the rewards of intoxication.Regions of the brain are affected differently by alcohol.  Surgeon General’s Report on AddictionAfter a period of abstinence from alcohol, which may last only hours, the drinker enters the Preoccupation-Anticipation Stage. This involves the prefrontal cortex, where executive decisions are made about whether or not to override the strong urges to drink. This part of the brain functions with a “Go system” and “Stop system.”When the Go circuits stimulate the habit-response system of the dorsal striatum, the drinker becomes impulsive with a craving and seeks a drink, perhaps even subconsciously. The Stop system can inhibit the activity of the Go system and is important especially preventing relapse after being triggered by stressful life events.Brain imaging studies show that binge drinking can disrupt the function in both the Go and Stop circuits. This interferes with proper decision making and behavioral inhibition. The drinker is both impulsive and compulsive. An illness that can be treatedThere is good news, as scientific evidence shows that this disorder can be treated. The FDA has approved three medications for treatment that should be offered whenever appropriate. There is well-supported scientific evidence that behavioral ther apies can be effective treatment. This includes recovery support services, such as Alcoholic Anonymous. Most importantly, it is important to know that alcohol use disorder is a brain disorder causing a chronic illness. It is no different from diabetes, asthma or hypertension. When comprehensive continuing care is provided, the recovery results improve, and the binge drinker has the hope of remaining sober as long as lifelong treatment and maintenance of sobriety become a dedicated lifestyle choice.Jamie Smolen, Associate Professor of Medicine, University of FloridaThis article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. What Makes You Unique How to Answer This Job Interview Question

What Makes You Unique How to Answer This Job Interview Question What Makes You Unique How to Answer This Job Interview Question 8“Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.”  Dr. Seuss knew it and so do you. Yet, how do you handle a question from a potential employer who wants you to describe what makes you unique? Here’s a sample question one company asked potential hires: “In 150 characters or fewer, tell us what makes you unique. Try to be creative and say something that will catch our eye!”   It can be challenging to list your uniqueness and avoid sounding like every other candidate or without overstating your qualifications in a way that makes you sound pompous.   As you consider  job interview questions to prepare for, what steps can you take to avoid being sidelined by questions about how you’re unique? Here are a few suggestions about how to answer the interview question: What makes you unique? 1. Do your homework. One way to answer this question would be to turn it around and transform the “what makes you unique” question into an opportunity to demonstrate what you know about your potential future employer. Said differently,  research the company before a job interview, and when they ask why you’re unique, demonstrate that it’s because you’ve thoroughly researched their brand and their products. Let your prospective employer know how they would benefit from your understanding of the company’s position in the marketplace, as well as any creative ideas you have for the future of the company or your prospective position.   2. Draw from your experience. Share with your potential employer a singular accomplishment in your background, or expand on an achievement from your resume, especially if it demonstrates qualities that are transferable to the job you’re going after. Whether it’s an anecdote that says a lot about your work ethics, a project that shows off your  leadership traits, or an undertaking that offers evidence of your ability to multitask, seize the opportunity to shine. 3. Mention what others have said about you. Another great way toot your own horn without actually having to do so  yourself, is to relay what past colleagues have said about you. This provides a window for shifting the emphasis away from your own self-assessment while also giving you the  opportunity to  bring up your best job references. 4. Share a relevant personal experience. Relevant is the key word here.  By asking what makes you unique, hiring managers are giving you a little bit of rope so you can let loose about your special qualifications. But don’t hang yourself! Stay on topic and be very specific. If discussing a travel experience, for example, capitalize on it to demonstrate how that experience helped you use or develop skills that you can bring to your prospective position. Check out more job interviewing tips. Readers, have you been asked in a job interview to describe what makes you unique? Share your tips for successfully answering this question! 5 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Career Coach

5 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Career Coach 5 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Career Coach Whether it’s to give your job search more direction, or help you if you’re stuck at a career crossroads, a career coach can be a great professional asset. Before hiring a career coach, though, be sure to ask some questions to ensure that the person you’re seeking guidance from is a good fit for you and your career. Here are five questions to ask before hiring a career coach:   1. What is your process? It’s good to have an idea of the game plan your potential career coach is going to take for your career. After all, there really shouldn’t be any surprises, and you should know exactly what steps theyll have you take in order for you to achieve the results you want. So go over, in detail, the career coach’s methodology to see if it sounds like what would you want for your career. 2. How do you measure success? Everyone has their own measuring stick when it comes to success. Some believe that doing what you love is success enough, while others count the dollars and cents on the way to success. First, understand what success means to you, and then find a coach who thinks accordingly. That way, you’ll both be in sync when it comes to helping you achieve the results (and career) that you want. 3. Can you cite some success stories? It’s all fine and dandy to cite some stats on previous’ clients success, but to really understand if the career coach you’re looking to hire is as good as they say they are, you should really ask for some success stories. This serves two purposes- first, it helps affirm if you’re on the same page regarding what success means to you both.
